On 26 July 2016, the NSW Government officially launched the first-ever legislated whole-of-government Strategic Plan for Children and Young People which will help ensure children and young people in NSW have opportunities to thrive, get the services they need and have their voice heard.
As part of developing the Plan, the Office of the Advocate of Childr en and Young People consulted with more than 4,000 children and young people right across NSW. The Plan aims to ensure children and young people in NSW are safe, connected, respected, have opportunities, are healthy and well, and have a voice in decisions that affect them.

The Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People wants to sincerely thank government departments and agencies, NGOs and civil society organisations.

Our legislation

The Advocate for Children and Young People Act 2014, sets out our responsibilities and our main functions.

The main functions are to:

  • advocate for and promote the safety, welfare and well-being of children and young people aged 0 to 24 years
  • promote the participation of children and young people in the making of decisions that affect their lives
  • conduct special inquiries into issues affecting children and young people
    make recommendations to government and non-government agencies on legislation, reports, policies, practices, procedures and services affecting children and young people
  • conduct, promote and monitor research into issues affecting children and young people
  • promote the provision of information and advice to assist children and young people
  • prepare, in consultation with the Minister, a three year strategic plan for children and young people in NSW.

Parliamentary Joint Committee on Children and Young People

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Children and Young People is a joint statutory committee which monitors and reviews our work and consists of three members from the Legislative Council (Upper House) and four from the Legislative Assembly (Lower House).
The Joint Committee also examines trends and changes in services and issues affecting children and young people, and makes recommendations on the need for changes to the functions and procedures of the Office of the Advocate.
